Care guide
How to Clean and Store Artificial Jewellery
Artificial jewellery stays bright for much longer when you clean it the gentle way and store it dry. Here is exactly what to do, piece by piece, and what never to use.
How to clean artificial jewellery at home
- Start dry. Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth (a microfibre or spectacle cloth is ideal) to lift sweat, oil and make-up. For everyday dullness, this is all it needs.
- For a little grime, barely dampen a corner of the cloth in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, wipe gently, then wipe again with a clean damp corner.
- Dry it straight away with a dry cloth and leave it in the open air for a few minutes before you put it away. Moisture left on the surface is what dulls a finish.
- Around stones, use a very soft, dry brush (a clean make-up brush works) instead of rubbing.
What never to use
- Soaking in water, or washing under a running tap
- Toothpaste, baking soda, vinegar, lemon or salt: these are abrasive or acidic and wear the finish away
- Silver dips, metal polish or polishing cloths made for real silver
- Ultrasonic cleaners, hot water or a hair dryer on high heat
- Perfume, sanitiser or alcohol wipes directly on the piece
Artificial jewellery kaise saaf karein (quick steps)
Soft sukhe kapde se ponchein; zyada gandagi ho toh kapde ko halka sa sabun-paani mein geela karke ponchein, phir turant sukha lein. Paani mein na dubayein, aur toothpaste, baking soda ya nimbu bilkul na lagayein. Har piece alag, sukhe pouch mein rakhein.
Care by type of piece
- Huggies and hoops: wipe the inside of the hoop too, where it touches the skin, and close it gently.
- Studs and drops with crystals: brush around the stones with a soft dry brush; don't pull on drops or chains.
- Necklaces and chains: fasten the clasp before you put a chain away, and lay it flat so it doesn't knot.
- Rings: take them off before washing hands, cooking or applying cream. If a free-size ring needs adjusting, open or close it gently and as little as possible.
- Bangles and cuffs: slip an open cuff on from the side of the wrist rather than pulling it wide each time.
How to store artificial jewellery
- Keep each piece in its own small zip pouch or a box with separate compartments, so pieces don't scratch or tangle.
- Store it somewhere dry and cool: not in the bathroom, and not on a sunny window sill.
- In the monsoon or a humid city, add a small silica gel sachet to the box.
- Travelling? A small pill organiser keeps earrings and rings apart.
Everyday habits that help most
Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray, lotion and make-up, and take it off first. Remove it before bathing, swimming, the gym and sleeping. Every Aashora piece is lead-free with an anti-tarnish finish, which slows tarnishing but doesn't stop it forever and isn't waterproof (read what anti-tarnish really means).
If a piece has already darkened
A light dullness usually wipes away with a dry cloth. A finish that has worn or darkened can't be restored at home, and scrubbing or polishing makes it worse, so stop wearing it in water or with perfume to keep the rest of the piece looking good.
