How to Choose Artificial Jewellery That Lasts
Good artificial jewellery looks like fine jewellery, feels comfortable all day and keeps its shine for longer. Before you buy, check six things: the finish, what it's made without, the clasp, the comfort, the photos and the returns.
What is artificial jewellery?
Artificial jewellery (also called fashion or imitation jewellery) is made from metal alloys with a gold-tone, rose-gold-tone or silver-tone finish, and crystals instead of real gold, silver or gemstones. It costs far less than fine jewellery, so you can match a piece to each outfit. How long it looks good depends mostly on its finish and on how you care for it.
A quick checklist before you buy
| Check | Why it matters | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | The surface layer decides how long the colour and shine last. | An anti-tarnish finish, described honestly (it slows tarnishing; nothing stops it forever). |
| Lead-free | You wear jewellery against your skin for hours. | The seller states it is lead-free. If your skin is sensitive, try a new piece for a short time first. |
| Clasp and fit | Most lost or broken pieces fail at the fastening. | Secure push-backs on studs, a clasp or adjustable chain on necklaces and bracelets, free-size or adjustable rings. |
| Comfort | Heavy earrings and stiff pieces stay in the box. | Light studs and huggies for daily wear; save long or statement earrings for a few hours at a function. |
| Photos and description | Online, the photos are all you can check. | Close-up photos from more than one angle, the real finish colour named, and no claims like “waterproof” or “real gold”. |
| Returns | Colour and size can look different in person. | A clear return window and how to raise a request, written down before you pay. |
Which piece for which day?
- Office and college: small studs, huggie hoops, a slim ring and a fine pendant necklace. Light enough to forget you're wearing them.
- Parties and wedding functions: crystal drop earrings, long cascade earrings or a layered necklace, worn for a few hours.
- With sarees and suits: drop earrings and long crystal earrings; a small drop or threader also goes with western outfits.
- Gifts: a set, or a bracelet with an adjustable chain, so there's no size to guess. See our gifts under ₹500.
How to make it last longer
Whatever you buy, care makes the biggest difference: put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and make-up; take it off before bathing, washing hands, cooking and the gym; wipe it with a soft dry cloth after wearing; and store each piece separately in a dry pouch. More in our anti-tarnish care guide.
